The Records and Archives Seminar 2016 took place in Pustaka Negeri Sarawak (Sarawak State Library) in Kuching, on 14-15 November 2016. This was the first seminar on records and archives organized by Pustaka with the theme ‘Our Records, Our Heritage’. The seminar was launched during a launching dinner by YB Datuk John Sikie anak Tayai, Assistant Minister for Natives Laws and Customs and Assistant Minister for Arts and Culture Sarawak on 14 November 2016.
The seminar had comprised of twelve presentations which were divided into six sub-themes and also included six workshops. The objectives of the seminar were to create awareness on the importance of records and archives, especially in the Sarawak Civil Service and to enhance awareness amongst the community on the importance of records and archives for sustainability of our history and heritage. Speakers for the seminar comprised of information professionals and experts in records and archives from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, Negara Brunei Darussalam, Republic of Korea and the United States of America. A number of presentations had given insights into best practices in records management, recordkeeping in the digital age, document and microfilm conversion technology, archives as the collective memory, and records and archives in justice, advocacy and reconciliation work. While the six workshops had covered various topics on classification of records, conservation and binding, community engagement for heritage preservation and traditional knowledge documentation program were presented by professionals from Malaysia and Singapore. A forum session with six speakers as panelists and moderated by Rashidah Haji Bolhassan, Chief Executive Officer of Pustaka was held on the last day of the seminar.
The seminar and workshops were attended by 286 participants from government agencies, institutions of higher learning, government linked companies (GLCs) and non-government organizations (NGOs) comprising information professionals, librarians, archivists, records managers, researchers, government servants, and students.
