The year 2016 has been a very exciting year for the communities in Tambunan, Matunggong and Kota Belud districts. On the 12 February, the Sabah State Library Tambunan branch was officiated by YB Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan who is the state Assemblyman for the Tambunan district. The new 2-storey 22,000 square feet building will provide a much more conducive environment for our library users in Tambunan. 4th April saw the opening of a new library service in Matunggong. Matunggong is a small town on the way to Kudat, which is about 2 hours’ drive from Kota Kinabalu. This 10,000 sq. ft. new library building was opened with much ethnic funfair as Rungus cultural performances were incorporated into the opening ceremony. The function was graced by YB Datuk Jainab DSP Ahmad Ayid who is the Minister of Community Development and Consumer Affairs. This Ministry also oversees the Sabah State Library.
On 13 August, the Sabah State Library together with the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Corporation (MCMC)officiated the Kota Belud Smart Community Programme. This 20,000 sq. ft. new library building was officiated by the Kota Belud Assemblymen YB Datuk Said Keruak who is also the Minister of MCMC.
With three new libraries added to the already wide network of public libraries in Sabah, we hope to ensure that communities in the rural and districts can have access to library and information services. Books and magazines in Bahasa Melayu, English and Chinese filled the shelves at the library while e-books are available for downloads for members throughout the state of Sabah. We strive to make access to information universal to all irrespective of where they are.
