SPEECH FROM THE PRESIDENT OF PPM AT THE LAS 60TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER ON 18 APRIL 2015 AT CONCORD HOTEL. SINGAPORE

The President of the Library Association of Singapore and members of LAS

My colleagues from Persatuan Pustakawan Malaysia

On behalf of the President and members of Persatuan Pustakawan Malaysia, I wish to thank the Organising Committee of the LAS 60th Anniversary Dinner. We are indeed honoured to be here to celebrate an important year for both LAS and PPM.

Both our Associations originate from the same root. As history goes, the late Mr Wilfred J. Plumbe and Mrs Hedwig Anuar first conceived the idea of setting up a library association to cover Malaya and Singapore. Using the then University of Malaya Library as their base, they invited librarians and interested people to get together and discussed the idea.  About 47 persons attended the meeting which was held at the University of Malaya Library in Singapore on Friday,7th  January 1955 at 8.30 p.m. These 47 people came from both Malaya and Singapore with the largest number coming from the University of Malaya Library in Singapore. Mr. E. H. Clark chaired the meeting and the attendees unanimously agreed that there should be a library organization to unite all those interested in library work. Another meeting was held in the Raffles Library on Friday, 25th March 1955 with 36 attendees who agreed to the formation of the Malayan Library Group or MLG. On 6th June 1955, MLG was  registered by the Registrar of Societies in Singapore with Mr. L. M. Harrod as the Chairman, Mr. Wilfred J. Plumbe as Vice Chairman and Mrs. Hedwig Anwar as the Secretary. The University of Malaya Library in Singapore became the Secretariat.

MLG in essence gave rise to two associations which is now known separately as the Library Association of Singapore and Persatuan Pustakawan Malaysia. Although we have gone our separate ways but we are in the know of each other’s activities through our formal and informal networks. The last activity which we held together was ten years ago – the PPM-LAS Commemorative Conference 2005 which was held in Kuala Lumpur from 6 to 8 April 2005.  This time round PPM will be making a conscious effort to revive the formal ties that we have had with LAS and not wait for another ten years.

PPM will also be celebrating our 60th anniversary with a conference that will run from 14 to 15 September 2015 in Kuala Lumpur. We will be having our Anniversary Dinner on the 14th of September 2015 and we would like to invite all of you to come and join us for the dinner.

PPM has also named 6th June of every year beginning this year as the National Librarian Day for Malaysia. 6th June was chosen as the date since it was on that date 60 years ago that MLG was registered by the Registrar of Societies in Singapore.

On behalf of PPM, I would like to convey a very warm Happy 60th Anniversary greeting to LAS. I  truly believe LAS will carry on the wishes of those who sat together and worked towards the formation of a group that will unite the librarians. Although we are two separate entities, I am sure we can work together to realise the dreams and wishes of the founders of the Group.

Congratulations and thank you.

Dr Nor Edzan Che Nasir, President, PPM 2014/2016
